Cotton, dri-fit or blend? A fabric and GSM guide for corporate t-shirts
Two t-shirts can look identical in a photo and feel completely different after five washes. Fabric and GSM are the reasons. Here is what to look for.
What GSM means
GSM is grams per square metre, the weight of the fabric. Higher GSM means a thicker, more opaque fabric that usually lasts longer. Lower GSM is lighter and cooler.
- Around 140–170 GSM: light. Fine for one-day events and hot weather.
- Around 180–200 GSM: the everyday sweet spot for tees and dri-fit polos.
- 210–270 GSM: substantial. Typical of good polos that hold their shape.
- 300 GSM and above: sweatshirt and hoodie weight.
GSM is only part of the story: the yarn, knit and finishing matter just as much. Compare GSM between garments of the same fabric type.
Cotton
Soft, breathable and comfortable for long days indoors. Cotton takes prints beautifully and feels premium at higher GSM. Combed and bio-washed cottons are smoother and pill less.
Choose it for: office wear, onboarding kits and anything worn by people who sit most of the day.
Examples: Bio-Wash Cotton Round Neck Tee from ₹330, and Organic Cotton Polo (270 GSM) from ₹590.
Polyester dri-fit
Moisture-wicking polyester pulls sweat away from the skin and dries quickly. It holds its colour and shape well and rarely wrinkles.
Choose it for: field and sales teams, events, sports days and outdoor or warm work.
Examples: PrimoKnit Dri-fit Polo (190–200 GSM dot-knit) from ₹320, and Aeropique Performance Polo (210 GSM) from ₹510.
Poly-cotton blends
Blends combine the softness of cotton with the durability and lower shrinkage of polyester, usually at a lower price than pure cotton.
Choose it for: large orders on a budget and uniforms washed very often.
Example: Eco Blend Round Neck Tee, a 180 GSM poly-cotton tee made with recycled plastic bottles, from ₹230. A good option if sustainability matters to your brand.

Knits and finishes you will see
- Single jersey: the smooth, flat knit of most t-shirts. Comfortable and great to print on.
- Piqué: the textured, honeycomb knit of classic polos. Breathable, holds its shape, and embroidery looks excellent on it.
- Dot-knit and mesh dri-fit: tiny holes or texture that help air and moisture move. Common in performance polos.
- Bio-wash: an enzyme finish that makes cotton softer and reduces fuzz and pilling.
- Melange: fibres of different shades knitted together for a heathered look, often grey. It hides wear well.
Care and washing
Ask your team to wash branded apparel inside-out, avoid bleach, and not iron directly over prints. Cotton may shrink slightly in a hot dryer, so line-drying is best. Polyester dri-fit dries fast and needs little ironing, which is why field teams like it.
Comfort in Indian weather
In hot and humid cities, breathable cotton or a good dri-fit is far more comfortable than a heavy, tightly knit fabric. For air-conditioned offices, a medium-weight cotton polo looks smarter and feels good all day. For winter offsites, move to fleece. See our hoodies and jackets guide.
Sustainability
Recycled polyester and blends made with recycled bottles, such as the Eco Blend Round Neck Tee, are a simple way to make your merch more sustainable without a big price jump. Organic cotton is another option for premium pieces.
